This temporary visa enables employers to sponsor skilled workers who possess the necessary qualifications to fill positions that cannot be filled by suitably skilled Australian candidates.
Short-term Stream
If your work and study related occupation is on the short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), you apply for this visa.
- Stay – You can work, and Live in Australia stay for up to 2 years or up to 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
Standard Requirements
- Be nominated for a skilled position by an approved sponsor.
- Have the right skills to do the job.
- Meet the relevant English language requirements.
Medium-Term Stream
If your work and study related occupation is on either the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL)
- Stay – You can work and Live in Australia up to 4 years and Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.

- Be nominated for a skilled position by an approved sponsor.
- Have the right skills to do the job.
- Meet the relevant English language requirements.
Labour agreement Stream
This visa is for skilled workers who are chosen by employers that have a special agreement with the Australian government. It allows you to live and work in Australia for a temporary period. These agreements, called Labour Agreements, are made between the Australian Government (represented by the Department) and employers.
- Stay – You can work and Live in Australia up to 4 years and Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
Standard Requirements
- Your employer has to have a labour agreement with the Australian government in effect.
- Be nominated for a skilled position by an approved sponsor.
- Have the right skills to do the job.
- Meet the relevant English language requirements.
Subsequent Entrant
This visa is for family members of people who already have a subclass 457 or TSS visa. If the family members want to apply for their own TSS visa and join the main visa holder in Australia, they can apply for this visa.
- Stay – You can work and Live in Australia for as long as your visa is valid.
