The visitor visa is a general term that can be divided into two main categories:
- For tourism and personal purposes, such as vacationing, recreational activities, visiting family members who are Australian residents, receiving medical treatment, and similar activities.
- For business activities, such as making general business or government inquiries, conducting business negotiations, visiting government organizations, attending conferences, seminars, job interviews, or professional examinations
In addition to these categories, there are also some special visitor visa categories available.
Medical Treatment Visa (Subclass 602)
This visa allows people to visit Australia for medical treatment or consultations. It can also be used to support someone who is already holding or has applied for this visa and needs medical treatment. Additionally, it allows individuals to visit Australia for the purpose of donating an organ.
Investor Retirement Visa (Subclass 405)
This visa is for self-funded retirees without dependents who wish to spend their retirement years in Australia.
Special Program Visa (Subclass 416)
This visa is typically obtained for special programs where an approved sponsor has invited individuals to participate in a specific approved program. The purpose is to promote international relations and cultural exchange between the Australian community and the rest of the world. The Special Program visa (Subclass 416) also has a Seasonal Worker Program stream.

Transit Visa (Subclass 771)
This visa is for individuals and their dependent children who need to transit through Australia for a maximum of 72 hours.
